Profiles on the BlackBerry is where you determine how you are notified when you receive emails, text messages, phone calls, etc.
 
To edit profiles:
Go into profiles (it looks like a speaker) and scroll down to advanced. On some devices, you may be taken directly into the profiles once you click on the speaker. Once you are in the profiles list, scroll to the profile you wish to edit. For trackwheel devices, click in the trackwheel and choose edit. For trackball devices, hit the menu  button and choose edit. Make sure you hit the menu button, because if you click on it with the trackball, it will make that the active profile.

Once you are in edit, you will notice that you have the ability to go through and change notifications to numerous things, so go through and set them to your liking. There are however a few things to take note of:

• The voicemail notification sound is the same as SMS Messages
• The BlackBerry will not vibrate and ring/tone at the same time. This will definitely be noticed if you have phone calls set to vibrate and tone, and you don't hear or feel the vibrations until the tone starts. By that time, the caller has gone through 1/2 their rings and is on their way to voicemail.
• There is an in-holster and out of holster option. If you use an OEM holster, the device will know when it is in or out of it, so you can set notifications accordingly, say as an example, if you want it to only vibrate when in the holster on your hip, but ring if it's out on the table.
