Home Screen Shortcuts | Top
Full QWERTY device users may wish to enable HomeScreen Shortcuts. This will allow you to use your device quicker, as it enables your keys for one-touch access to the most used applications on your BlackBerry, and you can still use your Speed Dial!
To enable these shortcuts:
- Press the green talk button to bring up your call log
- Bring up the menu and go down to Options
- Within Options, go to General Options, scroll down to Dial From Home Screen, and change it from Yes to No
- Save your changes and back out to the Home Screen
You now have one touch access to the following applications, just by pressing the corresponding key (Only press them, do not hold the keys, as holding the keys still allows you access to speed dials):
A: Address Book
B: Browser
C: Compose Message
D: Memo Pad
F: Profiles
K: Keyboard Lock
L: Calendar
M: Messages
N: BlackBerry Messenger
O: Options
R: Alarm Clock
S: Search
T: Tasks
U: Calculator

Auto On/Off | Top You can determine if you want your BlackBerry to turn on or off at certain hours on both weekdays and weekends. Be sure to carefully choose the on and off times so that your BlackBerry doesn’t turn OFF at 6am and turn back on at 10pm.
AutoText | Top AutoText works already as a mini-spell check, however, the best part is the ability to create your own AutoTexts. Bring up the menu and choose “New” and you can replace certain shortcut words with other words, phrases, or even entire paragraphs. An example is create “BRB” and replace it with “Be Right Back”. Anytime you type BRB in messages and hit the space bar, it will automatically populate “Be Right Back” for you! Think of the possibilities. OMG TY!
BlueTooth | Top Use this area to add devices, remove devices and change properties. When adding a device, after it is paired, click on that device and bring up the properties. Change the Trusted state to Always, that way you aren’t always having to physically tell your BlackBerry to connect to your Bluetooth product.
Date/Time | Top Here is where you set the date and time for your BlackBerry. All BlackBerry devices are set to Casablanca as the default Time-Zone, so make sure you change it to yours!
Media Card | Top This is where you can view information about the media card, and most importantly, format it! Make SURE that when you insert a media card into your BlackBerry, BEFORE you start to use it, format it here. It will make the media card readable by the BlackBerry and create subfolders which will be easier for you in the long run.
Owner | Top Any information which you put here will show up on the Home Screen of the device when it is locked. It will also populate anytime you write “sig” and hit the space bar. It is recommended here that you put information such as “Reward If Found” or “Contact If Found”. Also, make sure to put a contact number for them to call, and make it a number OTHER than your BlackBerry.

Font
Here you can change the font style, size, family and smoothing. The sentence “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” will change as you make the changes for you to preview, so customize it to your liking.
Backlight | Top
- Backlight Brightness: This is how bright your screen will be. The lower the brightness, the more battery life you will save. Also, remember that if you ever want to bring your screen to full brightness, just click the button on the top of your BlackBerry.
- Backlight Timeout: How long your device will be idle before the screen shuts off. Adjust accordingly.
- Automatically Dim Backlight: This is what causes the BlackBerry screen to sometimes get darker and other times brighter. It is a battery saving technique that some people love and others hate. It is set by “On” by default. So if you are tired of your screen dimming and getting brighter, turn it off here.
- LED Coverage Indicator: On new devices it is set “Off” by default. When turned on, the LED on the front of the device will flash green approximately every 3.5 seconds when you are in a wireless coverage area. This can become quite annoying. Note that this does NOT affect the red LED flash when you receive messages.
Keys | Top
- Key Tone: If on, it will make a sound every time you press a key, which can be quite annoying. Most users leave it off.
- Key Rate: Recommended to go ahead and set this Fast. It will allow you to type quicker.
- Currency Key: Set it to the appropriate symbol for your country.
Convenience Keys | Top
Here you can set your convenience keys on your device to offer one touch access to the applications which you use the most, so set accordingly.
Trackball Sensitivity | Top
On the trackball devices, you can determine the “quickness” at which your trackball moves around the screen. Most users find a 60 or 70 as the optimal setting. If you want to try 100, good luck, and let us know if you can actually use it accurately and quickly at 100!
Menu | Top
Menu Style is either short menu or full menu on the newer devices. Most users just set it to short menu, as when brining up menus, it lists the most commonly used options rather than the entire list.
Security Options | Top
Once you enter Security Options, the average end user will just need to go ahead and enter General Settings. Here you can set the password for your BlackBerry, determine how long the device is idle until it locks amongst other things. Note that for newer devices and operating systems, you have a “Number of Password Attempts”. This is how many times you can get the password wrong before the device wipes itself clean of all information. SO SET ACCORDINGLY HERE!
When the device is locked, you can still receive phone calls without having to unlock it, but the device will lock itself once the call has ended. And every BlackBerry has the ability to make an “Emergency Call (IE 911)” while the device is locked, so make sure you don’t dial it on accident!
One last note, NEVER turn on the Address Book under Content Protection. Your Caller ID will NOT work if you do this!
Spell Check | Top
On the newer devices that have Spell Check included, this is where you can turn on Spell Check to automatically check messages before sending.
Theme | Top
Check out the Themes that are already on the device, and once you are bored with them, head over to the themes section of BlackBerryHomePage to find 3rd Party Themes for your BlackBerry
